The Church Road Streetscape Enhancement Plan was completed to reimagine Greystones’ principal commercial street as a greener, safer, and more vibrant public realm, reconnecting the high street with its coastal setting. The project responded to the historic character of Church Road - once a tree-lined avenue - by reintroducing street trees as a defining structural element and placing a strong emphasis on pedestrian comfort, accessibility, and visual coherence.
A placemaking-led approach shaped by heritage, creating a street that is calmer, clearer, and welcoming for all ages and abilities.
The design balanced movement and placemaking, creating a more inclusive street environment that supports local businesses, everyday social activity, and sustainable travel. The process was informed by detailed analysis of existing conditions, including levels, accessibility constraints, and the street’s visual and material character.
The final scheme was structured around a clear spatial hierarchy, from the carriageway and crossing strategy through to pedestrian zones, greening, and a coordinated furniture palette. Robust, durable materials and consistent detailing were selected to reflect both the coastal setting and the town’s heritage, while new lighting, seating, and signage were integrated to improve legibility and reduce visual clutter.
Developed through an iterative process of design testing and stakeholder engagement, the plan established a cohesive and deliverable framework for Church Road. It aligns with DMURS principles and best practice in urban street design, supports Greystones’ local identity, and provides a practical benchmark for future public realm improvements. The project also included a review of existing shopfronts along Church Road, with recommendations for enhancement in line with the Greystones Shopfront Design Guide.
